African Sisters
As with all of the Dance the Spirit works, African Sisters was literally inspired by the a’a niu, the coconut cloth out of which the painting springs.  This is a mixed media painting in Politec glaze painting, pencil, detailed newspaper collage, coconut fiber, bamboo, beads and leather.  This is the artist’s only newspaper collage mixed media work, focused on Chicago and the amazing time we live in ~ past, present and future at once.

It has been said by spiritual masters that the past, present and future are all happening at the same time, and in many ways, this is not some subtle, ungraspable reality of quantum physics, but a visible, mysterious reality.  Indigenous cultures are disappearing faster than any other species, and with these native root peoples go the wisdom of the land and how to live well on the land sustainably.

These are sisters of Mother Africa, united in oneness of the great continent and the immense challenges of contemporary life.

This is a prayer for all women everywhere, ancient and modern to preserve the wisdom cultures of the Earth for the benefit of all and the benefit of the land and its diversity of life.
