What is a Mandala?
A mandala, an ancient Sanskrit word meaning circle, unity, and wholeness, is a powerful symbol found across cultures and time. Representing the structure of the U niverse, mandalas have been painted, carved, and woven into sacred architecture, from temples and cathedrals to ancient sites aligned with cosmic forces.
Nature, too, is filled with mandalas—from the Sun and Moon to the intricate symmetry of flowers, snowflakes, tree rings, and even our own eyes.
Calley’s Journey
In 1975, a kaleidoscope from her mother sparked Calley’s passion for mandalas. She spent seven years painting them exclusively. For two years, she created a mandala a day, a meditative and therapeutic journal of art and insight.
In 1980, she led 12 New Jersey artists in painting 15 large-scale mandalas on a 7,000 square feet mural depicting The History of Agriculture in the United States.
The Power of Mandalas
For centuries, mandalas have been successfully used for healing, labor and childbirth, meditation, and deep connection to Being. Their beauty and symmetry invite stillness, clarity, and a sense of wholeness.
